Playground To Be Named To Honor Tarrytown Woman

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – A new fitness playground at Washington Irving Intermediate School has officially been named in honor of former Tarrytown resident Michele Boylan-Chebetar.

School board officials approved the measure at a recent board of education meeting after holding the requisite three public hearings. The Elementary Parent Teacher Association had asked the school board to name the playground after Boylan-Chebetar, who died unexpectedly in May. She was an active parent at Washington Irving and in the EPTA.

“Her loss is a huge blow to all the lives she touched: countless WI students who she interacted with on a daily basis,” said David Neilsen, EPTA president, in a letter to the school board. “We feel that naming the playground Michele Chebetar Park will honor her memory and be a fitting tribute to a woman who gave her all to the children of our school district.”

School board officials said they would be planning a naming ceremony for some time in the future.

Officials and parents were supportive of the naming when it was first introduced. “She was an extreme asset to our community, to the girls in our Girl Scout troop and all the kids at WI,” Parent Fatima deCarvalho-Gianni said, later adding, “She was a wonderful woman and a wonderful role model.”

Parent Danielle Chung said Boylan-Chebetar was “very committed to the students and the kids,” she said. “I think that this would be a wonderful tribute for her.”
