Thousands were on hand or watching live streams, including on the New York New Bridge website, on Tuesday morning, when the explosives at the 64-year-old bridge went off at approximately 10:52 a.m. on Jan. 15, marking the end of an era.

It might be gone, but a local photographer, Dan Gallo, managed to capture each step of its demise in the photo gallery above.

Despite frigid temperatures - temperatures felt like approximately 10 degrees - hundreds lined up in Westchester, shouting “blow it up” to watch the controlled blast, which took down the bridge.

The bridge was initially scheduled to be demolished last week, but weather conditions forced a delay until Tuesday morning. The initial plan to take down the bridge involved calling in cranes to pick the bridge apart piece by piece and then carried away by barge. Instead, with the demolition complete, they will begin removing pieces from the Hudson River.

The satirical Twitter account @oldtzb had fun with the momentous occasion, posting several one-liners in the wake of the demolition.

“Is this going to hurt? Somebody hold me,” they posted shortly before the explosion. “For those of you concerned about trolls: they live under bridges and I’ll try to take out as many as I can on my way down.”
