IRVINGTON, N.Y. The big goal for the Irvington Board of Education in 2012 is to hire a new superintendent, replacing Kathleen Matusiak who retired suddenly during the summer in 2011.
School officials hope to hire a new superintendent in February.
It's just really, really the most important thing on your plate for this year, and you're going to want to do it right, Interim Superintendent Robert Roelle told board members during a Board of Education meeting.
Matusiak's sudden retirement meant school officials had to quickly find an interim superintendent to take over for the 2011-12 school year. They hired Roelle, who had been a superintendent for several decades in Ossining and was the superintendent of the Katonah-Lewisboro Union Free School District.
Roelle began his job in August and helped guide the school board in its superintendent search. School officials hired search consultant firm Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates to find a permanent superintendent for the 2012-13 school year. The superintendent search process included getting input from school officials, teachers, community members and parents during a few days in November.
Parents told search consultants they wanted a bulldog superintendent: someone who was a leader with vision. A leadership profile was constructed and school board officials adopted it in its search for a superintendent.
The search continued through the end of 2011, with consultants going through resumes they had received. School officials said they hoped to have a selection of candidates to examine in January.
