Irvington Makes Headlines in 2011

IRVINGTON, N.Y. – Whether it was crazy weather or new faces in the Irvington School District, 2011 was a busy year for the village of Irvington.

The Daily Tarrytown has compiled a list of the year's top 5 stories.

Crazy weather meant Hurricane Irene visited Irvington, knocking out power and flooding the parking lot on Bridge St. Irene wasn't the only freak occurrence. Remember the Virginia earthquake? How about the Halloween nor'easter?

Superintendent Kathleen Matusiak suddenly retired over the summer after seven years on the job. Matusiak was replaced by interim superintendent Robert Roelle.

Tragedy struck one Irvington family after Betty Iannarelli, 84, went missing in early August and was later found dead.

Transportation officials outlined a new, scaled-down Tappan Zee Bridge to replace the decades-old bridge spanning the Hudson River.

A wastewater treatment plant fire caused millions of gallons of sewage to leak into the Hudson River, prompting county health officials to advise residents to avoid direct contact.
