IRVINGTON, N.Y. The New York City skyline was visible Tuesday morning from Scenic Hudson Park as Irvington residents gathered to remember 9/11. It was the same spot where they stood 11 years earlier, watching a national tragedy unfold.
Today is almost a perfect mirror image of that day, the Rev. David Harkness said.
Firefighters, police officers and other first responders stood at attention while a wreath was placed near the village's 9/11 memorial: two black towers standing beside an American flag. The village's fire horn sounded nine times and then two more times, signaling 9-1-1.
Mayor Brian Smith led the short ceremony, urging residents to remember the victims of the attack and the first responders who are now facing health issues from the aftermath. Smith said he feared that 11 years later, people would start to forget about what happened that day. A small crowd of about 50 residents gave him hope, Smith said.
The Rev. Raymond Byrne prayed for residents to set aside their vengeance and seek service to others.
We may resolve to do our best to bring peace to our little acre of this world in our hears and in our homes, he said.
