The second annual Irvington Penguin Plunge will take place on March 2 at Matthiessen Park, village officials announced Tuesday. The fundraiser, sponsored by the Fundraising and Community Events Committee, will help raise money for programs in the Parks and Recreation Department.
Last year's plunge raised about $76,000, supporting, among other things, the senior program, open gym, summer camp scholarships and July Fourth fireworks. About 100 people signed up to raise money and brave the frigid waters last March.
This year's plunge already has four participants vying for pledges: Mayor Brian Smith, Kristy Schmitt, Jonny Kashkin and Jamie Gehman.
Residents can sign up to take the plunge by downloading an application and sending it to the Irvington Recreation Department.
