Fire Company Gives Scholarship To Sleepy Hollow HS

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – The Union Free School District of the Tarrytowns accepted a $3,000 scholarship during their Thursday Board of Education meeting from Tarrytown's Consolidated Engine Company in memory of Anthony Ruggiero and John Kelly.

The scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior in the spring on the basis of community service and academic achievement.

"We would like to thank the Consolidated Engine Company No. 1 for the scholarship,” School Board President B. Joseph Lillis said.

The scholarship is the result of a memorial car show that the company held for Ruggiero and Kelly. The two men died in September 2010 after entering a manhole.

Consolidated Engine firefighter Chuck Pateman said before the car show that the company wanted to see Ruggiero and Kelly's generous spirit live on.

"They were two of the most giving people that you'd know," he said. "One of those guys, you call them round the clock, seven days a week, it didn't matter what time it was or the situation was, they were going to be there."
