TARRYTOWN, N.Y. A few dozen people love the Earth so much they decided to devote some time to tidying it up.
Several Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown residents spent their Saturday in work gloves, picking up trash for Earth Day through organized cleanups of the Tarrytown Lakes and village streets.
It's a joint effort of both villages to keep the villages clean and green, Carole Griffiths said. Griffiths is the chair of the Tarrytown Environmental Advisory Council.
She said the villagewide cleanup began several years ago, when the council decided to celebrate Earth Day by cleaning up the Tarrytown Lakes. The program eventually expanded to all of Tarrytown, and then the Sleepy Hollow Environmental Advisory Council joined in.
On the day of the cleanup, residents, students from Sleepy Hollow High School-Middle School and Boy Scout Troop 22 combined to pick up trash in the villages. The Boy Scouts dedicated themselves to Patriots Park, while middle school students were assigned a few streets in downtown Tarrytown.
We try to cover the major streets downtown and the aqueduct, Griffiths said. I just drove around quickly to see where there was a lot of garbage, so I know North Washington and Central have a lot, so we're going to try to concentrate on that.
Griffiths was hopeful about the day's turnout, noting that Troop 22 had brought a dozen people to Patriots Park earlier than advertised. A separate crowd gathered at the same time at the Tarrytown Lakes to take part in their own cleanup efforts.
The Tarrytown Lakes Committee saw several dozen volunteers from the EF International Academy, Sleepy Hollow Middle School and the Institutes of Applied Human Dynamics come to help clean up the trail system. Organizers brought breakfast and drinking water for the group, which included many who frequent the trails.
