TARRYTOWN, N.Y. The traditional gift for a 50th anniversary is gold, but Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino told the DoubleTree Hotel on Thursday that the county's deficit and the high price of gold meant that wasn't going to happen.
We do have an $8 proclamation, he said.
The DoubleTree celebrated its 50th anniversary on Thursday with a lunch reception for various community leaders and residents including Astorino, Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner and Tarrytown Mayor Drew Fixell.
Astorino praised the hotel's contributions to the county's economy, saying it paved the way for the growth of the hotel and tourism industry in Westchester County. He noted it brings in $1.5 billion to economy.
The very significant role that this hotel would play in Westchester's future could not be imagined, Astorino said when discussing the hotel's beginnings.
The DoubleTree Hotel opened 50 years ago on December 1, 1961 as Westchester County's first high-end hotel. General Manager Rich Friedman said it was originally built to accommodate visitors to the 1964-65 World's Fair in New York City.
The hotel managed to survive over the next 50 years and here we are today, Friedman said.
Mayor Drew Fixell helped celebrate the anniversary on Thursday with a proclamation and words of support for the hotel.
The DoubleTree is a great neighbor, great member of our community, Fixell said.
