The Civil Rights Movement will take center stage at Warner Library on Thursday night at 7 p.m. in the reading room as the first act of a two-act play by William Tucker will be performed.
The play "Freedom Summer" is about the heroic efforts of Bob Moses, a 24 year old Harvard graduate, and other volunteer civil rights workers of the Student Non- Violent Coordinating Committe (SNCC), who braved an incredibly violent and repressive Southern Society in an effort to register voters and breadk the back of Jim Crow segregated culture, according to Warner Library Director Maureen Petry.
Admission is free. The performance will feature music written by jazz composer and pianist Sam Waymon. Waymon is a veteran of the Civil Rights Movement. His composition for the movie "Philadelphia" was included in the Academy Award for Best Musical Score.
Tucker has written four books and also works as a journalist. During the summer of 1964, Tucker worked as a volunteer during the Freedom Summer.
