Charitable Donations Near $34M In Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow, Irvington

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow residents give a bigger percentage of their income to charities than Irvington residents, according to a recent study by The Chronicle of Philanthropy.

The Chronicle found that Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow and Pocantico Hills residents gave an average of 4.9 percent of their income in 2008, compared to an average of 3.5 percent in Irvington. However, the median contribution of Irvington residents was $5,425, higher than the median contribution of $2,814 in the 10591 ZIP code. The 10591 ZIP code includes Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow and Pocantico Hills.

The Chronicle studied tax records from 2008, the most recent year for which data are available. The study includes only taxpayers who reported incomes of $50,000 or more because of discrepancies in data for people with incomes below that, The Chronicle said. To account for higher costs of living in some areas, the study looked only at income remaining after taxes, food, housing and other necessary expenses were paid.

The 10591 ZIP code ranked 1,662 in total donations out of 28,725 ZIP codes nationwide. The study found that residents of 10591 gave a total of $19.4 million in 2008, with the median contribution at $2,814. The median is the point at which half the contributions are higher and half are lower.

Residents of the Irvington ZIP code, 10533, which includes the East Irvington neighborhood in Greenburgh, ranked 2,583 out of 28,725 ZIP codes in charitable donations. The study found that residents of that ZIP code gave $14.5 million in 2008, with a median contribution of $5,435. For the Village of Irvington itself, the study found that it ranked 1,606 of 11,522 municipalities nationwide in total donations.

Throughout Westchester, residents gave an average of 4.6 percent of their incomes to charity, with a median contribution of $2,796. Westchester ranked 12 out of 3,115 counties, giving $1.2 billion in 2008.

New York state residents gave a total average of 4.7 percent of their income to charity, with a median contribution of $2,266. New York ranked second in all states when it came to charitable donations, giving $11.3 billion in 2008.
