Car Misses Raccoons Hits Sleepy Hollow Gas Station

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – A pair of raccoons caused a car accident early Monday morning in Sleepy Hollow that left a trail of destruction at the Getty gas station on Route 9.

Sleepy Hollow Police Lt. Anthony Bueti said the driver told police she was heading south on Route 9  around 3:30 a.m. when she swerved to avoid two raccoons that were crossing the street. Bueti said she told police when she swerved back, she lost control of her vehicle.

The car hit a curb, flower box, light pole and tree before hitting two gas pumps at the Getty gas station.

“It just seems like a bad accident,” Bueti said.

Two summonses for damage to village property have been issued. Bueti said the driver and several passengers in the car were treated for minor injuries and released from Phelps Memorial Hospital Center.

Damage from the accident had mostly been cleared by Wednesday, although the two gas pumps were still out of service.
