TARRYTOWN, N.Y. Sometimes all it takes to get people to run 4 miles is the promise of a frozen turkey just in time for Thanksgiving.
The six lucky runners were all smiles as they held aloft their frozen trophies and some more traditional trophies after being declared the three fastest in the men's and women's categories.
Tarrytown resident Ian Colley finished the race around the 28-minute mark. He said the weather was good for the race. Colley has participated in the Pilgrim Run about 10 other times.
I think when I younger I probably ran a little faster, but this is the fastest I've done in a few years, he said.
Recreation Supervisor Joe Arduino said the race had about 115 runners.
We like to say it's successful, and we enjoy doing it, he said. I think everyone really has a good time.
The four-mile Pilgrim Run took runners throughout eastern Tarrytown, from Hackley School through the Crest neighborhood, the Tarrytown Lakes, the Wilson Park Drive area and the Rockefeller area. Runners ended up back at Hackley School, where they crossed the finish line on the school's athletic field to lots of applause and cheering.
Arduino said a couple of hills make the course hard, especially one near the EF School.
That's when you're hitting the third mile of the race, he said. You kind of hit a wall there.
The Pilgrim Run started out as a family road race about 25-30 years ago, Arduino said. Now, it's evolved into any number of people from all over the Westchester area.
The Tarrytown Recreation Department hosted the event, with more than 20 sponsors from the Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow area. In addition to the top six prizes, race officials hosted a raffle and gave away several prizes to runners.
