TARRYTOWN, N.Y. The EPTA of the Tarrytowns will honor former member and parent Michele Boylan-Chebetar this Friday when its officially dedicates the new Washington Irving fitness playground.
A short ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Tarrytown playground. EPTA President David Neilsen said in an email announcing the dedication that it will be "a chance for us to thank everyone in the community for all their hard work and support in bringing this to life, as well as serve as the official hand-over of the playground to the district."
"We will also take the opportunity to remember our dear friend Michele Chebetar, after whom the park is being named, and the wonderful contribution she made to the lives of all our children," he said.
EPTA volunteers gathered in September to construct the playground at Washington Irving Intermediate, which originally was a high school and had no playground. The playground was funded by community donations.
The Board of Education unanimously approved the decision to name the new fitness playground at the school after Boylan-Chebetar in November. Boylan-Chebetar was only 34 when she died in 2011. She worked at Washington Irving and was very active in the EPTA, especially on its playground building committee.
Trustees said they favored naming the park after Boylan-Chebetar. Trustee Mimi Godwin said she felt the playground wouldn't exist without the efforts of the EPTA. Since it did all the work and put in all the effort, she said she feels they have every right to make the suggestion.
