Aldina da Silva, 82, Former Tarrytown Seamstress

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – Aldina Miranda da Silva of Cortlandt Manor died April 10 surrounded by family. She was 82.

She was an active member and longtime volunteer for the Portuguese American Cultural Center in Tarrytown.

Da Silva was born Jan. 19, 1930 in Boco, Portugal, to Guilhermina de Jesus Pinho Miranda and Manuel de Almeida Miranda. On Jan. 19, 1957 she married Sebastião Afonso da Silva in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and they moved to the U.S. in October of 1957. 

A professional seamstress and pattern maker, da Silva worked for many years as floor lady of Merl Industries in Tarrytown. She loved to prepare elaborate meals for her family and friends. She also enjoyed crocheting, knitting and sewing.  

Da Silva is survived by her husband, Sebastião; two daughters, Candida Miranda da Silva (Carlos Manuel) Rodrigues of Buchanan and Cecilia Miranda (Arlindo Sanches) Silva of Cortlandt Manor; two brothers, Mario Miranda and Morais Miranda; and four grandchildren. 

She was predeceased by four brothers, Manuel Miranda, Domingos Miranda, David Miranda and Armindo Miranda; and three sisters, Ilda Miranda da Silva, Lucilia Miranda Loureiro and Francelina Miranda de Oliveira.  

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at Coffey Funeral Home in Tarrytown. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. Teresa of Avila Church, with burial following in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
