The performance starts at 8 p.m., at the music hall at 13 Main Street in Tarrytown, according to a press release. The concert is the conclusion performance of the group's fall tour from the Jazz Forum Arts, according to the release.
"Sweet Honey In The Rock has a rich legacy of performing at some of the most prestigious venues in New York including numerous engagements at Carnegie Hall, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Blue Note Jazz Club, BB Kings, and JALC's [Jazz at Lincoln Center's] Rose Hall," representatives said in the release. "The ensemble's latest double CD, "Sweer Honey in the Rock: A Tribute, Live! Jazz at Lincoln Center," captures the group's sold out performances at JALC in April 2011. The Tribute record pays homage to the music of legendary jazz divas Abbey Lincoln, Miriam Makeba, Odetta, and Nina Simone."
Last month, the group launched its first fan-driven funding initiative known as Indiegogo, with the goal to raise $35,000 to offset the group's production costs for the 40th anniversary tour starting in January, according to the release.
"Challenge and change are the themes underlying the 39-year career of the revered female African-American a cappella ensemble, which was formed as a quartet in 1973 at a workshop at the D.C. Black Repertory Theater Company in Washington by Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon," representatives said in the release. "In the course of creating its adventurous and diverse mixture of blues, African, jazz, gospel and R&B music, with excursions into symphonic and Dance Theater, 23 vocalists have passed through the group."
The current lineup for the group includes Carol Maillard, Louise Robinson, Nitanju Bolade Casel, Aisha Kahlil and Shirley Childress, according to the release. “Sweet Honey is an amazing group that embraces a wide range of musical genres,” Mark Morganelli, executive director for Jazz Forum Arts, said in the release. “At the same time, they work to inspire a multidimensional and intergenerational audience to find and use their individual and collective voice to address the critical issues of our time, and to celebrate our common humanity. We’re honored that they’ve made Tarrytown Music Hall a stop on their tour, and thrilled to bring exciting performances like this to Westchester.”
