TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Phelps Memorial Hospital Center recently celebrated National Volunteer Week.
The Sleepy Hollow hospital said thank you to all of its volunteers during the week of April 6 to 12. The week is "dedicated to publicly recognizing the important role the hospital's adult and student volunteers play, seven days a week, from morning till night" at the hospital, representatives said. A special volunteer appreciation luncheon to be held in May at Tappan Hill Mansion will conclude the celebration.
"On behalf of Phelps, I want to thank the volunteers not only for the gift of their time but also for promoting goodness and improving the human quality of life for our patients, their families, and our staff," said Pamela Cardozo, director of volunteer services.
In 2013, nearly 250 Phelps volunteers provided more than 52,000 hours of caring and comfort to hospital patients and their families, representatives said.
"The hours volunteers donate to Phelps are given in a variety of ways. Those who staff the Information Desk in the main lobby are the first point of contact for visitors and patients, providing a warm welcome as well as directions and general information," representatives said. "Every day, volunteer Patient Representatives are seen visiting patients, adding an extra 'dose' of caring and a listening ear, while Silver Spoons volunteers can be seen feeding patients needing special assistance at mealtime."
All of Phelps' volunteers are individually trained in their service area, representatives said in a release.
"They are always mindful of Phelps' goal of providing the best possible hospital experience, resulting in the highest level of patient satisfaction," representatives said. "A major focus of this training involves a specially designed communication model that emphasizes using 'Words That Work' with every patient, every family, every time."
