TARRYTOWN, N.Y. More than 60 children's book authors and illustrators gathered in Tarrytown on Saturday at the former home of author Washington Irving as Sunnyside hosted its annual Children's Book Day.
Putnam County author Gail Carson Levine said Sunnyside's annual book fair is well known well beyond to local area. She met people from New Hampshire and Virginia on Saturday.
I've come here for years, and generally it's a beautiful day, she said. It's nice to meet readers."
The event included book signings, readings, demonstrations, magic and music. Famous characters such as Clifford the Big Red Dog and Franklin the Turtle were also on hand to greet kids and get them reading. Costumed characters also roamed near Irving's house, ready to bring guests back in time to the 1800s.
Children and their parents wandered around the grounds, buying books and meeting authors. Long Island author Richard Brenner says he met many kids who read his sports books. The annual event is a habit for him, Brenner said.
I've been coming here for about 10 years now, and I like meeting the kids, he said.
