Phelps Hospital 'Health Life Series' Continues Through December

The series continues to offer the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects as well as numerous health screenings and support groups. All events are free and most take place on the Phelps campus, 701 North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow.

The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for December follows:

Tuesdays, Dec. 3 and 17 - Senior Steps Part of the Vitality Initiative at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, Senior Steps includes health screenings, nut rition education, exercise and special events for seniors. The club meets from 10:00-11:30 am in various locations throughout the hospital. Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow. Registration is required. Call 914-366-3937.

Wednesday, Dec. 4 - Mind Games Part of the Vitality Initiative at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, Mind Games is a fun way for seniors to help stimulate their minds and improve cognitive functioning (memory, visual recall, problem solving, focus and speed, and spatial reasoning) by playing Boggle, Set, the Memory Game, Sporkle and many other games in group, team and individual formats. Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow in the Auditorium from 2-3:30 pm. Call 914-366-3937 to register.

Wednesdays, Dec. 4 and 18 - Blood Pressure Screenings Conducted the first and third Wednesday morning of every month at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow fr om 9:30 - 11:30 am in the Walkway Conference Room. Thursdays, Dec. 5 and 19 - Bereavement Support Group An ongoing support group for adults struggling with the loss of a loved one meets the second and fourth Thursday of the month from 2 - 3:30 pm at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow in the James House. Led by Bess Steiger, LCSW, bereavement coordinator. Suggested donation: $10 per session. Call 914-366-3325 for information.

Sunday, Dec. 8 - Tree Lighting Ceremony Annual tree lighting by Phelps Hospice in memory of or in honor of loved ones begins at 4:30 pm with a reception in the cafeteria at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow. The public is invited to attend and the tree will remain lit through mid-January. For more information, call 914-366-3325.

Monday, Dec. 9 - Chronic Cough Screening People often ha ve a chronic cough despite numerous doctor visits, medications, and diagnostic tests. Coughing associated with throat clearing, voice changes, trouble swallowing, nighttime cough, and vocal spasms can often be caused by chronic laryngopharyngeal reflux disease. Alternatively, some people feel a tickle in the throat that precedes a cough, a dry spot or dryness in the throat, or a cough that may be caused by irritation of a nerve. Free screenings for these types of coughs will be offered by Craig H. Zalvan, MD, laryngologist, Medical Director, Institute for Voice and Swallowing Disorders.
