The high school senior student-athlete seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash while on her way to a ceremony at Shoreham Wading River High School has died from the serious injuries she sustained.

Melissa Marchese was 18 years old.

A standout softball and basketball player for the Wildcats, Marchese, who was scheduled to graduate June 28, had accepted a scholarship offer to play softball at the University of Hartford.

"The Shoreham-Wading River School District community is devastated to learn of the tragic loss of one of our students who was involved in a motor vehicle accident Thursday night," the SWR School District said in a statement on Saturday, June 15, two days after the crash. "Please know we will be here to support our students through this very difficult time."

The school district said the high school library will be open as a gathering place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and there will be staff there for support.

"Also, our full mental health team will be available and ready for students as they return to school next week," the school district said. "Most importantly, we extend our deepest condolences to the individual’s family and friends and we continue to keep all those involved and impacted by this tragedy in our thoughts during this very difficult time."

The crash occurred near the high school on Thursday night, June 13.

According to Suffolk County Police, Evan Flannery was driving a 2007 Hyundai Elantra southbound on Miller Avenue and was turning left onto Route 25A when his car was struck by a 2006 Honda Accord, being driven westbound on Route 25A by Michael Troiano at approximately 6:50 p.m. Thursday, June 13.

A passenger in the Hyundai, Marchese, of Shoreham, was airlifted via Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries, according to police.
