Bicyclist Seriously Injured In Crash With SUV At Busy Suffolk Intersection

A bicyclist was hospitalized with serious injuries after being struck by a teenage driver at a busy Long Island intersection, police said.

First responders were dispatched to the intersection of New Highway and Walnut Road in North Amityville at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Friday, May 8, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart said.

According to police, North Amityville resident Cindy Barrera, 19, was driving a 2001 Ford Escape southbound on New Highway, when she struck a bicyclist, whose name has not been released.

The bicyclist was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip for treatment of “serious injuries,” Hart said.

Barrera and her two passengers were not injured.

Hart said that Barrera’s SUV was impounded for a safety check, and the investigation into the crash is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding the crash has been asked to contact Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives by calling (631) 854-8152.
