The incident happened at around 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, on the Southern State Parkway in Babylon.
New York State Police said the single-engine Cherokee Archer made an emergency landing on the eastbound shoulder of the parkway near exit 33.
The aircraft avoided hitting any cars, but photos showed its right wing bent backward alongside a traffic sign that was knocked over.
Two people who were onboard were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Troopers have now identified the occupants as 42-year-old Benson Matthew, of Hicksville, and 24-year-old Anthony Lanni, of the Bronx.
The plane had just taken off from Republic Airport in East Farmingdale when the pilot reported engine trouble, ABC7 reports.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the incident.
