Rebuilding Primrose Playground

SOMERS, N.Y. - The line at Somers' King Kone seemed to stretch to infinity and beyond on Friday, September 9, as hundreds of people waited patiently for their turn at the window. Were owners Deb and Brian Hopkins giving away their soft-serve ice cream, 18 flavors of hard ice cream or hamburgers and hotdogs? No! But --

They were donating a portion of the evening's proceeds to the Primrose School Playground Fund. Somers residents turned out en masse to take advantage of the Hopkins' generosity and have a delicious Friday night snack at the same time. King Kone raised $2,800 and donated $600 back to the fund. Another $346 accumulated in the cash jar during the evening.

The K-2 Primrose School is badly in need of new playground equipment. The current equipment is twenty years old and mostly beyond repair. Yet the playground is used day in and day out by the ever-growing student body, and also on weekends by children and families.

The current economic slowdown has eliminated the possibility of funding from the school budget. So a group of devoted parents and teachers have been pounding the pavements, or more probably, burning rubber, enlisting the aid of local businesses and organizations. New equipment is expected to cost about $90,000.

Once Upon a Child, which sells new and gently used children's items, donated a percentage of its sales in July. The sum came to $600, and owners Tina and Craig McMaster rounded it out to $1000.

On Sunday, September 18, a fundraising concert will be presented at 3 p.m. in the field at Primrose School. The featured artists are the very popular local group, Andrea and the Armenian Rugriders, performing without fee, and Leapin’ Little Ones has donated a bounce house for the occasion. A silent auction will include restaurant certificates, golf outings, jewelry, wine, and much more.

Tickets for the concert are $15 per family in advance, or $5 per person at the door. To order tickets or for further information, call the Primrose School at 914-248-8888.
