East Ramapo To Appoint Wortham As Schools Superintendent

RAMAPO, N.Y. -- The East Ramapo Board of Education aims to remove the interim tag from Deborah Wortham's title and install her as the Superintendent of Schools during a meeting on Tuesday.

Wortham, who has led school districts in Roosevelt, Long Island and York, Pennsylvania, was hired by the school board in October to serve as interim chief after Superinendent Joel Klein's resignation.

The school district began its search in late 2015, hiring a Manhattan-based superintendent search firm, School Leadership, for help. Headhunters were tasked with a series of specifications based on school officials' insights, gathering recommendations from the public and seeking out candidates. Based on that, the firm whittled down a field of more than a dozen candidates to a handful.

"Dr. Wortham has proven herself again and again during her time as interim superintendent," Board of Education President Yehuda Weissmandl said in a statement. "She is a large part of our reason for progress since last year and we want her to continue and expand her role."

Once approved by the board, the district's lawyer will work out details of a contract and submit it for final approval to the board by June 7.
