“Today, I was proud to stand with Rockland’s elected officials and advocates to fight to ensure that we achieve paid family leave for New Yorkers this year," Skoufis said. “We are the most prosperous nation in the world, yet we are one of only two developed countries on the planet to not have paid family leave. New Yorkers should never be forced to choose between caring for their newborn child or sick family member and being able to pay the bills.
Under the governor's proposal, employees would be entitled to 12 weeks of paid leave to deal with major life events such as the birth of a child or the serious illness or death of a parent or a loved one.
During the event, Cuomo touted his proposal to about 100 people, most of them fellow Democratic elected officials and members of community-based organizations.
Proponents claim the plan would strengthen the workforce and overall economy, especially for women, minorities and low-income workers. Skoufis agrees, saying many politicians talk about supporting family values yet there is no greater opportunity to do so than enacting paid family leave: "It is my and thousands of New Yorkers deep hope that the Senate gets behind our proposal."
