Jewish Leaders Rally Against East Ramapo Schools Monitoring Plan

RAMAPO, N.Y. – A number of ultra-Orthodox Jewish leaders are banding together to fight a state panel’s recommendation that a monitor with veto power oversee the troubled East Ramapo Board of Education, according to a report on Lohud.com.

Dennis Walcott, former New York City chancellor, recommended that the state provide a monitor with veto to oversee the East Ramapo school district. Ultra-Orthodox Jewish leaders in Rockland County are rallying constituents to fight the move.

The media outlet had previously reported that the leaders had accused the state Education Department and Dennis Walcott, a former New York City chancellor who is leading the three-person monitoring team, of “stabbing the religious community in the back.”

Several groups opposing the request for such oversight have sprung up in Rockland County, Lohud reported.
