Firefighters Face Exploding Fireworks While Battling Blaze At Cortlandt Home A firefighter was hospitalized following a blaze at a Northern Westchester home that caused fireworks inside the residence to explode, complicating the response.   The fire happened at a residence in southern Cortlandt on Croton Lake Road on Wednesday, July 5 just after 3:30 p.m., according to the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department.  Once crews arrived at the home, they quickly began putting out the flames, which were centered in the residence's garage underneath the living area. Long-Serving Firefighter, Teacher From Somers Dies A firefighter and teacher from Northern Westchester who served his department for more than 50 years has died.  Somers resident Fred Whipple, who served the Somers Volunteer Fire Department for 58 years, died on Sunday, March 19, the department announced.  Since joining the department in 1965, Whipple became known by many for his great personality and he eventually became the "true senior man" at the firehouse, lending his knowledge and experience to many younger members, according to the fire department. Vehicle Blaze Leaves Car Seared On Busy Yorktown Road Firefighters were called to put out a raging vehicle fire on a main road in Northern Westchester.  The fire happened on Sunday, Jan. 29 around 1:50 p.m., when firefighters in Yorktown responded to the intersection of Crompond Road (Route 202) and the Taconic State Parkway northbound exit ramp to put out the blaze.  Just under two dozen firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire, which left the vehicle heavily damaged and burned.  Luckily, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
