During her career, Johnson, 80, spent time serving as the Deputy Assistant Secretary and Acting Assistant Secretary for Education under President Bill Clinton and spent decades educating students in the Hudson Valley. Johnson spent 10 years as the Schools Superintendent in Peekskill, becoming the first African American to hold that post. Former Middletown Mayor Gertrude Mokotoff Dies At 100 Former Middletown Mayor Gertrude F. Mokotoff, a 66-year area resident, died at the Orange Regional Medical Center in the Town of Wallkill on Wednesday, Oct.17. She was 100 years old. The daughter of the late Abraham and Anna Fox, she was born on August 20, 1918, in Brooklyn. She later married her first husband, Reuben Mokotoff, a cardiologist from Manhattan, where they lived until she talked him into moving his practice to Middletown in 1954. A professor at S.U.N.Y.
