Port Chester Heat Calls For Chilled Mangoes

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- Alfredo Moldonado and his sister Jaely Velasquez enjoyed the breeze as they rode their bikes through the baking streets of Port Chester to their favorite ice cream shop.

But they didn’t go to  Paleteria Fernandez on Main Street for the ice cream -- it was the chilled mangoes they wanted.

"It's really good with lime juice and salt," said Alfredo, 16.

However, he passed on the chili powder, which is another popular seasoning in Latin American cuisine.

Temperatures hit a high of 92 degrees Thursday but felt closer to 98 degrees with the humidity.Customers were flocking to Paleteria Fernandez for ice cream, frozen yogurt, frozen fruit popsicles and of course, the chilled mangoes."Today was a good day for business," said owner Nancy Fernandez. "But I wouldn't want to be outside."Friday may bring even more customers with an expected high of 98 degrees that could feel closer to 108 degrees with the humidity. The heat index will come down slightly to 100 degrees Saturday with isolated showers and thunderstorms. The temperature is expected to drop near 89 degrees Sunday with more storms. What is your favorite treat on a hot day?
