Ruben Santiago, age 39, was arraigned in Westchester County Court on Thursday, March 7 on a 27-count indictment in connection with the January shooting of his ex-girlfriend, the Westchester County District Attorney's Office announced.
According to the DA's Office, at around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 2, Santiago forcibly entered the Sleepy Hollow home of his former girlfriend on Chestnut Street in violation of an order of protection. He then shot the woman with a .38 revolver while young children were present in the residence, officials said.
The victim suffered wounds to her neck and hand and was later treated at an area hospital.
Additionally, the DA's Office alleges that Santiago assaulted the victim while children were present just days before the shooting on Friday, Dec. 29. He was arrested on the same day and the victim was issued an order of protection, which Santiago violated between Saturday, Dec. 30 and Monday, Jan. 1, according to officials.
Santiago again violated the order of protection after the shooting between Tuesday, Jan. 16, and Wednesday, Jan. 24, despite his arrest on Wednesday, Jan. 3 by Sleepy Hollow Police, the DA's Office added.
Some of the additional charges now faced by Santiago, who remains remanded in Westchester County Jail, include:
- First-degree attempted murder;
- Three counts of first-degree burglary;
- Four counts of endangering the welfare of a child;
- Second and third-degree assault.
Santiago will again appear in court on Thursday, April 4.
