Westchester Teen To Compete In Nation's Top Junior Chess Tournament A Westchester teen will be competing in the U.S. Junior Championship for a chance at a prize worth more than $20,000. The event is considered to be the country’s most elite, invitation-only junior chess competition. Dobbs Ferry resident Nicolas Checa, 17, will travel to the U.S. Chess Capital of St. Louis and compete at the Saint Louis Chess Club between Wednesday, July 10 and Sunday, July 20. Horace Greeley High School National Merit Semifinalist Samuel J. 'Sabrina' Kaplan Dies At 17 Samuel J. "Sabrina" Kaplan of Chappaqua, an accomplished student at Horace Greeley High School, died of metabolic causes on Friday, Sept. 17 in Syosset at the age of 17.  Later in life, Sam's chosen name was Sabrina. The name Sabrina and appropriate pronouns will be used out of respect for her journey and her wishes. Sam is survived by mother, Nicole Turano of Chappaqua; grandparents Margot and Vincent Turano of Carmel; father David Kaplan, stepmother, Alice and younger half-siblings, Natalie, Arthur and Benjamin of Syosset. Hudson Valley Man Killed When Car Crashes Into Tree In Mississippi A 31-year-old Hudson Valley man was killed in a car crash while helping friends move down south.Scott Fish of Carmel was pronounced dead at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, Mississippi after his car slammed into a tree on Interstate 59 at around 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 30. He is survived by his father, Scott M. Fish Sr., his mother, Joan L. Fish, sister Rebecca DeLuca, and brother-in-law Alfonso DeLuca.
