A former New York State Police trooper who claimed that a driver shot him, triggering a region-wide manhunt, made the whole thing up, prosecutors alleged.
Thomas Mascia, 27, of West Hempstead, surrendered to police Monday morning, Jan. 27, before being arraigned on a count of making a false report and related charges in Nassau County District Court.

Missing Hudson Valley Teens May Be Traveling Out Of State, Police Say
Authorities are asking for the public’s help in locating a pair of Hudson Valley teenagers.
Sullivan County residents Lariah Uhl, 15, and Lluvia Garcia, 16, were last seen in the town of Liberty on Thursday, Jan. 23, according to the New York State Missing Persons Clearinghouse.
Uhl was last seen wearing a one piece black jumpsuit, and Garcia had a black sweatshirt, black sweatpants, and was carrying a white purse.
The teens are believed to be together and may be traveling to Denver, Colorado, officials said.

A 38-year-old former Tenafly police officer has been convicted of aggravated manslaughter in the fatal shooting of his husband, a retired NYPD officer in 2023 in Sussex County, authorities said.
On Tuesday, July 25, 2023, Joseph Grieco and his husband, John Kelly had returned to their Vernon home from a night out with friends, Sussex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said. A routine traffic stop in Northern Westchester led to the discovery of a loaded firearm and high-capacity magazine as well as the arrests of three individuals, authorities announced.
The incident occurred early Monday morning, Jan. 20, around 2:20 a.m., when a Peekskill Police Officer stopped a vehicle on the 700 block of North Division Street, according to the department.
The driver, Daniel J. Gonzalez, was found to be operating the vehicle with a revoked license, a felony violation under New York State law, Lt. Adam Renwick said.
