The man was found when members of the Newburgh Fire Department were dispatched to a fire at 6½ Farrington St.  at 11:43 p.m., Friday, Feb. 8, said Terry Ahlers, Newburgh's acting fire chief.

Crews arrived in under two minutes and found heavy fire showing from the front of a multi-family, two-story home, Ahlers said.

The residents from the second floor reported the resident from the first floor as unaccounted for. Crews immediately stretched hose lines and initiated a search for the missing occupant, he said.

The man, who was believed to live alone, was located quickly, but already deceased.

The two-alarm fire, which appeared to be accidental and started on the second floor, was under control at 12:20 am.

The building has fire and water damage on both floors and is unlivable at this time, Ahlers said.

There were no additional injuries to civilians or firefighters.

City Fire Investigators and the Police Department were assisted by Daisy, the Westchester County Accelerant Detection dog and the NYS Office of Fire Prevention and Control.

"The investigation is still ongoing at this time but does appear to be accidental," he added.

West Point, Middle Hope, and Air Guard fire departments assisted at the scene, and Cronomer Valley and Vails Gate Fire departments helped with stand by.
