Monroe will host four games at the Monroe Athletic Complex on Jan. 12. The Saunders and Eastchester High School girls’ teams will play at noon, followed by the boys’ teams at 2 p.m.
The White Plains High School boys will face Poughkeepsie at 4 p.m. and the New Rochelle High School boys will square off with Middletown High School at 6 p.m. to finish the action.
Admission will cost $5 and all proceeds, including tickets, t-shirt sales, raffle drawings and a Steiner Sports Memorabilia auction, will benefit the JDRF.
Saunders boys’ coach Anthony Nicodemo helped to organize the event partly because his nine-year-old godson is diabetic.
"The people at Monroe and Steiner, along with the JDRF have just been amazing to work with," Nicodemo said. "This year, not only are we putting on a great lineup of games for the schools and their fans, as part of the project, the JDRF is visiting schools to help spread awareness. So it's not only about raising money, it's about educating young people about how to stay healthy and live better lives."
Saunders will host a “Captain’s Luncheon” on Jan. 11 to announce and promote the event. The lunch will have a special guest speaker and all coaches and team captains will attend.
More than 1,000 people attended last year’s event at Monroe and raised more than $2,700 for the JDRF.
