MetroCard Mobile Van Sells Cards in New Rochelle

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Westchester County Bee-Line bus riders and New York City mass transit users now have a place to buy MetroCards on the go.

The MetroCard Mobile Van started its rounds on Monday selling cards to customers throughout Westchester. The van, now in its 15th year of service, sells Metro Cards and E-Z Pass services to Westchester County citizens. Richard Singh, a collecting agent for MTA New York City Transit, said the latter is a new feature of the van.

Singh also provides customer service from the van.

"If they have problems, we solve their problems, as well," Singh said.

The van began its service for the summer on Monday with its first stop in New Rochelle, at the corner of Huguenot and Bridge streets. The van also travels to Mount Vernon, Peekskill, Tarrytown, Yonkers and White Plains. The van makes its rounds for one week starting on the third Monday of each month from July to September.

Customers age 65 and older and those with certain disabilities can buy reduced fare cards from the van. Singh said  if a customer has a worn or damaged card, he will take it from them an issue a temporary card to the customer while a new one is being printed.

Customers can also refill their MetroCards at the van.

Singh said the longevity of the project speaks to its success.

"Fifteen years tells you something," Singh said. "It started as a pilot program and it's still going on. There's a demand."
