Family Of Man Shot, Killed By New Rochelle Police Sues

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- The family of a schizophrenic man who was shot and killed by New Rochelle Police filed a $21 million federal law suit on Tuesday against the city and the officers involved in the incident, according to LoHud.com.

Elsa Cruz, the widow of Samuel Cruz, filed the suit in U.S. District Court in White Plains, according to LoHud.com.

On May 26, Elsa Cruz called police to her home stating that her husband needed medical treatment. When police arrived, Elsa Cruz stated she heard three loud bangs. Police allege that Samuel Cruz was lunging toward them with a knife, according to LoHud.com. 

Elsa Cruz's suit accuses the New Rochelle Police Department of mishandling the incident. An unspecified amount for punitive damages is also included in the suit, on top of the $21 million, according to LoHud.com.
