Columbus Elementary School Chess Club Claims Championship

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- The Columbus Elementary Chess Club from New Rochelle took home nine awards last weekend in its first tournament of the school year at the National Scholastic Chess Federation Columbus Fall Classic.

Award winners included the Columbus Junior High Reserve section team, first place team trophy; and Jason Zheng, 2nd place, Junior High Reserve section. 

In the Booster section, Columbus captured the first place team trophy; individual awards went to Steven Ramos, 3rd place; Kenneth Concha, 4th place; Alexander Ciriaco, 5th place; and Deven Coulanges, 6th place. 

In a tournament highlight, Ronny Perez won 1st place as an unrated player in his very first tournament. Other team members are Darren Chen, Luis Jimenez, Catalina Concha, Cynthia Vilcapoma, and Sophia Maldonado. 

Playing as a two-player team in the Primary Novice section, 3rd graders Evelyn Valencia and Leandra Evangelista won a 3rd place team trophy. 

Overall, the Columbus Chess Team is closing in on 100 first place team trophies after winning their 96th and 97th this tournament. They will compete again on Dec. 12 at William B. Ward Elementary School.
