Long Island Woman Killed After Being Struck By SUV

A woman who was crossing a busy Long Island street was killed after she was hit by an SUV changing lanes.

It happened on Saturday, Feb. 1 just before 6:30 p.m. in Centereach.

Christine Chellis, 35, of Centereach, was driving a Chevrolet Suburban westbound on Route 25, west of Wood Road, and was changing from the right lane to the left lane when the vehicle struck a pedestrian crossing the street, Suffolk County Police said.

The pedestrian, Laura Godek, 57, of Centereach, was transported by Centereach Fire Department Ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Chellis was not injured.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. Anyone with information on this crash is asked to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
