Families Displaced Following Mount Vernon Fire

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- More than two dozen Mount Vernon residents are displaced following a fire that sparked in a three-story city apartment building Wednesday night.

Fire officials confirmed that shortly before 8 p.m. on Wednesday, a fire broke out at a Mount Vernon Avenue apartment complex, forcing 26 people to flee the building, mostly from the fire escape.

The two-alarm fire was swiftly knocked down, but firefighters had to deal with a flareup approximately two hours later. It was officially announced under control Thursday morning. A handful were treated for minor injuries, and several of the residents were being assisted by the American Red Cross to temporarily relocate.

According to an ABC-7 report, the two-alarm blaze forced one resident to jump from a window. Fire crews from Yonkers assisted in knocking down the fire.
