The incident took place around 8:40 p.m. Wednesday at the Mall at 2276 Bartow Ave., in the Bronx, said the New York City Police Department.
The injured teen was found lying on the ground of the mall parking lot with a stab wound to the upper left arm by officers Sean Liscoe and Alyssa Petrucelli, the NYPD said.
Officer Liscoe used his department-issued tourniquet and applied it to the victim's arm, essentially stopping the bleeding.
During this time Officer Petrucelli attempted to keep the victim alert by speaking to him and rubbing his chest. Once EMS arrived at the location the victim was removed to Jacobi Medical Center conscious and alert.
Doctors at the hospital advised the officers that they tourniquet saved the victim’s arm from being amputated.
A crime scene was immediately established and Thomas Gibson of Yonkers was taken into custody.
Gibson was charged with felony assault.
