The congresswoman grilled DeVos Wednesday during the House Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations Subcommittee Hearing on President Donald Trump's proposed budget for the U.S. Department of Education.
"This budget reflects the views of an administration filled with people who frankly never had to worry about how they were going to pay for their children going to college," Lowey said. "It's clear to me you do not have the necessary funding of our education system."
Lowey invited DeVos to visit schools in the 17th District, which she represents.
"The teachers I know don't stop working when the final bell rings," Lowey said. "They work for hours every night getting prepared for the next day. Let's improve the system rather than the destroy the system."
