When Lindsay Mann of Greenburgh began high school, she collected fashion magazines. But her interest was not the clothes, but how they were photographed. That brief interlude ended when she realized fashion was part of her DNA.
In April 2010, Mann started Lindsay Alicia, a company that makes custom knitwear for the professional woman in her 20s and 30s who wants to look confident and dress comfortably.
I love making new garments, said Mann. I love dressing and creating my customers. All I want is for people to wear my garments and for them to say that they feel good, sexy and classy.
Mann was born and raised in Greenburgh and attended the Central 7 schools, including Woodlands High School. She studied liberal arts at Sarah Lawrence College for a year-and-a-half before transferring to SUNY Purchase. From 2005 to 2009, she attended the Fashion Institute of Technology.
Her collection has changed from body suits and leggings to sweater dresses and tops, but the heart of her work will always be knitwear and making her customers feel good about what they put on their bodies. She expects her collection to continue to evolve.
Her first fashion show took place at Sarah Lawrence in 2003. Inspired by its preparation and production, she has held a yearly show since.
When her business first started, everybody wanted one specific dress that she made: [description of dress TK]. To accommodate new customers, she made 50 of them in four different colors. Now she revels in making made-to-order clothes for her clients.
Her goals are either for her clothes to be sold in a boutique or, if she can, to have her own. Her plans are to create more one-of-a-kind pieces. She is also anxious to open her catalogue to carry accessories.
