Fall and Winter Meld as Snow Falls in Cortlandt

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. – Two inches of snow had already hit the ground by 1 p.m. in Cortlandt Manor, melding winter and autumn together for a rare October snow.

“They should stay off the roads unless they have a four wheel drive vehicle or snow tires, once it reaches the 2 inch threshold they should stay off the road. They can’t keep up with it,” said Sergeant Michael Nolte of the Croton Police Department. “We’re starting to have residual problems that go along with snow,” Nolte said.

The National Weather service has predicted the snow to continue through this evening, with possible accumulations of eight to 12 inches. A winter storm warning is in effect, visibility is limited on roadways, roadways will be slick and wet, and downed trees are possible because of weighty wet snow.

Some residents remember sudden snow falls during October, but these snowfalls are intermittent by decades. Cindy De St Phalle, a member of The Daily Croton's Facebook community, said, "I can remember October '87 a sudden snowfall while working in a stable in Bedford. The flies were literally frozen still to the metal partitions it dropped so suddenly!"

"Trees are already leaning low on Maple Avenue," said Furnace Dock Road resident, Barbara Savatteri, "it is truly a winter storm."

Measurable snow hasn’t fallen in October in New York City since 1952.
