Lakeland's Scavelli Signs With Michigan

From the moment Shannon Scavelli was in elementary school and began watching older sister Stephanie have an outstanding field hockey career at Lakeland, she knew what she wanted.

“Watching Stephanie play field hockey made me know that I loved the sport and I would want to continue with it at the next level,” Scavelli said.

The Lakeland senior and brilliant field hockey player assured herself of playing collegiate when she signed a national letter of intent Wednesday to attend the University of Michigan and play field hockey.

Scavelli was not the only Lakeland field hockey standout to sign. Teammate and good friend Emma Bozek inked her national letter of intent to attend the University of North Carolina and play field hockey. The duo led Lakeland to three Section 1 Class B and New York State championships. Lakeland is the first Section 1 field hockey program to win three consecutive state titles.

Wednesday was the first day of the national signing period for high school seniors.

“Today felt surreal,” said the excited Scavelli. “I committed during April of my junior year and it felt like today would never come. It was great to be surrounded by my family and friends as I made my commitment to Michigan official. Signing with a school like Michigan is something that I did not envision, but it truly is an honor to have been given this opportunity and I am truly grateful.”

Scavelli and Bozek gave opposing teams fits during games for three years, especially this season as they combined for more than 100 points. When one scored a goal, it was usually the other who assisted. There was little doubt that Scavelli and Bozek, who were both first-team all-Americans, were two of New York’s elite players.

“It was great being able to sign with Emma,” Scavelli said. “We have so many incredible field hockey memories together, but this one was very special and one that I am sure neither one of us will forget.”
