SHRUB OAK, N.Y. - When Shannon Scavelli and Emma Bozek joined the Lakeland varsity field hockey team as an eighth-grader and freshman, respectively, coach Sharon Sarsen was excited about their future.
Scavelli and Bozek would go on to have outstanding careers and leave a lasting impact on the program, winning three consecutive Section 1 Class B titles as well as three straight New York State Class B championships -- 2009, 10, 11. Lakeland now stands alone as the only Section 1 school to win three state titles in-a-row and owns six altogether.
The magical tandem added another honor to their impressive high school resumes with a selection to the 2011 National High School Field Hockey Coaches Association All-America first team. Scavelli and Bozek are the only New York players chosen first team after being second-team picks last year.
Both join their respective older sisters -- Shannon Scavelli and Megan Bozek -- who were also All-America selections and led Lakeland to state titles -- Scavelli in 2006 and Bozek in 2009.
I am kind of speechless, said the modest Scavelli, who will attend the University of Michigan next year and play field hockey. To be recognized on a national level with Emma is something I never would have thought of. This is a tribute to Sars because we never would have gotten here without here and everything she taught us.
Scavelli also enjoys being a two-time all-American along with her sister. Its pretty cool, Scavelli said. We have so many memories. I am sure we look back on this when we are older and reminisce.
