Kennedy Catholic, DeMello Look to Playoffs

SOMERS, N.Y. – The Kennedy Catholic boys’ basketball team is primed and ready to hit the postseason playoffs as the Section 1 boys’ tournament begins its opening-round games Friday.

The Gaels, 14-4 over the regular season and seeded No. 4 in Class A, will host No. 20 Lourdes (9-10), the winner of a play-in game against Beacon Wednesday, in a 4:30 p.m. start Friday at the Somers-based high school.

Gaels’ guard Mike DeMello answered three important questions about Kennedy’s chances in the postseason.

How has the team improved since the start of the season?

As a whole, we've been playing unselfish and making the extra passes on offense. At the start of the season we didn’t have that team chemistry just yet.

What are the team’s strengths?

Our team strengths include a defense that is really coming together. What’s great about this team is that on any giving night anyone of us can be "our guy". Any one of us can score. We don’t just have one or two scorers. We can all put the ball in the basket.

What are the keys to success in the postseason?

We have to commit to team defense. We have great individual defenders, but we need to defend as a team. We need to take care of the ball. And then practice and play as hard as we can. We should be fine.
