Barry Highlights Four Hen Hud Wrestling Champions

PEARL RIVER, N.Y. – Sean Barry knew his opponent all too well when he stepped on the wrestling mat for the 285-pound final at the annual Michael O’Connell Tournament.  The Hen Hud senior and Pleasantville’s Obum Anyichie practices once a week so Barry realized it was time to alter his strategy.

“Because we live close to each other and there are not many 285-pounders to work with, we practice with each other,” Barry said. “I usually go with my move but I knew he would be expecting it so I wanted change things up.”

The switch worked as Barry pinned Anyichie 1:10 into the final at Pearl River, fueling Hen Hud to a third-place finish.

The Sailors rang up 111.5 points, one behind runner-up Washingtonville. Tappan Zee won the team title.

Hen Hud did lead the tournament with four champions – Phil Siegel (160 pounds), Josh Perl mutter (145), Kevin McDermott (132) and Barry. Siegel, who registered his 109th varsity win, was named the most outstanding wrestler in the upper weights (from the 145-weight class up).

Once Barry got a feel for the match, he went to work.

“He was a little more defensive than usual because when we practice he is a lot more aggressive,” Barry said. “I went with the over and under hooks.”

This is Barry’s first O’Connell title. He was out and missed the tournament in his freshman and sophomore years. Last year, Barry said he did not wrestle well and did not place.  “It feels great to win,” he said. “Winning never gets old.”

McDermott walked away with his first wrestling tournament title, scoring an 18-2 technical fall over Nyack‘s James Giraldez. Earlier this month, McDermott was a finalist at the Jerry McGuire tournament.

“When I got to the finals at North Rockland I was a little nervous,” McDermott said. “Coming into this final, I was calm and knew that if I wrestled my best I could come away with the win.”

McDermott secured the first takedown 25 seconds into the match and was in control.

“Getting to the finals today made me hungrier,” McDermott said. “It’s nice to get to a final but always nicer to win.”

Siegel pinned Ellenville’s Ken Krygier at 3:17 and Perlmutter decisioned Irvington’s Brett Pastore, 10-8.

Jack Wagner (106) finished third and Rob Fahey (126) was fourth.
