Hen Hud Fashion Show an Out-of-the-Box Fundraiser

MONTROSE, N.Y. – The third year of Hendrick Hudson High School’s senior fashion show attracted more than 50 seniors who will model borrowed garments to raise money for their school.

“When I joined the PTA, to be part of the committee, I wanted to do something new and fresh, and it took off tremendously," said Sandra Ferguson, a district resident and stylist. "I think the first year I had maybe 15 students at the original meeting.”

Clothes from local retailers Marshalls, T.J. Maxx and Cache are modeled, then returned. Proceeds benefit the high school PTSA, which among other things, supports after-school SAT classes.

Thursday afternoon, the scene in the cafeteria is bustling with seniors taking practice struts between lunch tables, an informal catwalk. High-energy pop with a heavy beat blares from the speakers, and Ferguson takes a stab at organizing chaos, as nearly 100 students watch their peers walk the runway.

“It gets a lot of people out of the box,” said Claire Pershing, a senior participating in the fashion show. She said Ferguson puts together outfits the students wouldn’t necessarily pick out themselves. “It lets us kind of try on a whole other personality.”

A universal teenage love for clothes can be blamed for the breadth of participants. Football players and library lovers converged on the cafeteria for the rehearsal.

“It’s really just fun,” said David LaFemina, as he stood with a group of athletes. LaFemina played fall football as a running back for the Sailors. He said the show is “going to get a good laugh.”

“It’s senior year, and it brings us out of our comfort zone,” said another senior participating, Chris Ciboso.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Hendrick Hudson High School cafeteria. Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for students.
