CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Croton police reported an attempted burglary just before 1:30 p.m., Monday on Old Post Road North. A suspect rang a homeowner's doorbell continuously before the basement window was smashed in an attempt to gain entry to the house, police said. The suspects then fled the scene, police said.

After an investigation, police said they believe there are three suspects. One ringing the doorbell to determine if the homeowner was home and a second on the phone ordering the third suspect to break into the basement.

Police say a woman was cleaning her home at about 1:20 p.m. when her doorbell rang. Assuming it was a package delivery, she ignored the doorbell. Then, the doorbell began ringing continuously. Not expecting anyone, she did not answer the door.

After a delay, she opened the door to find what police said the woman described as a large black male, approximately 6-feet, 1-inches tall and heavyset. Speaking to the man through the outer door glass, police said the woman reported being asked if she ordered a tow truck. She said "no," and asked if there was anything else. The man said "no" and returned to the back seat of a black four-door car parked in her driveway. The woman reported seeing a second man in the front seat of the car on a phone.

At this point, the woman called police to report the incident. Moments later, the "hysterical" woman called again, reporting she believed someone had broken into her basement and was "breaking things."

As she was on the phone with police, the suspects fled the scene. Police were unable to locate the vehicle.

The suspects did not gain entry to the home, but did smash a basement window in an attempt to gain entry. The deadbolt on the basement door held.

Police are investigating the incident.
