Umami's Giant Pumpkin Vandalized Over Weekend

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – In a bizarre act of vandalism, someone allegedly attacked the half ton white pumpkin outside of Umami Café on Saturday night, hacking it open and stealing seeds. Owner of the café, Craig Purdy, said he hasn’t called police about the matter, but will be looking for giant pumpkins next fall.

“They want to grow a giant pumpkin,” said Purdy. “We’ll be looking on Google Earth next fall to see where the giant pumpkins are.” There was a hole, about a foot long and six inches wide, carved into the side of the pumpkin. The hole looked like the work of a small hand saw or electric saw.

The half-ton pumpkin, nicknamed the “Ghost Pumpkin,” was set up as a contest outside of the café during October's Jack O’Lantern Blaze at Van Cortlandt Manor. The patron who guessed closest to the pumpkin’s actual weight, 1,163 pounds, received dinner for four at the café.

Purdy said the vandalism took place some time between 11 p.m. Saturday night and noon Sunday afternoon. Purdy said that although it’s sad to see the pumpkin meet such a violent end, he wouldn’t have been much kinder. In order to remove past pumpkins, Purdy has used a chain saw to chop them into pieces.
